In the article, "Should Everyone Get a Trophy?" by Lauren Tarshis, she talked about how kids get a trophy just for showing up to team practices. Our school system decided more than a decade ago to pass kids on to the next grade regardless of how successful they were on their report card. Do you think kids should fail?
Should Kids Be Held Back? Yes kids should be held back. Before someone can move on to the next grade, they need to understand the grade they are at. If they continue to move on without understanding their grade and work then they will not feel they are succeeding. If they feel they are not succeeding, they will give up. Without support and encouragement from parents and teachers, kids will not strive to get good grades and complete their work. Education comes with alot of hard work but it can also be fun too.
One thing that will support my opinion is that if they are not held back, they won’t get a good education. When not succeeding in school, getting a job in the future will be extremely hard. If you work hard and get good marks through school, you won’t have any problems. If you don’t get a good education and understand, it will not be easy to go on to high school or even make money.
Secondly, Public School has an effect on your future! It is where you learned to add, subtract, multiply, and divide. It is where you learned to read and write. These skills will help to get a job. You need them to get a job because if you are a cashier you need to know numbers, but if you are a journalist you need to know how to read or write.
Lastly, being held back shouldn’t be treated as a punishment but to help kids understand that they need to work hard and ask for help when needed. Being held back is to help kids keep up with their work and not get too far behind so that they become frustrated and disruptive in their class. Kids should be punished for their behavior and their refusal to learn.
Being held back, I would hope would only be used as a last resort. Hopefully with alot of hard work and support from parents, teachers and whoever can help, kids will advance through their education without to much trouble. If extra help is needed for a student hopefully, it will not be to difficult to get a student that with extra encouragement will get them through their difficult time. Education is suppose to be a fun and learning experience.
